International Student Services

 

Student Responsibilities

General

  • Employment: You are not permitted to work off-campus unless you have specific authorization from an international student advisor or from the Department of Homeland Security.
  • End of Program: You have 60 days to depart the US or transfer to another institution at the conclusion of your program.
  • Federal Taxes: F-1 students are required to file federal tax forms every year they are in the U.S. regardless of whether they worked. The deadline to file the forms is April 15. For more information please attend the Tax Workshop held during the spring semester.

Reporting

  • International Travel: You need to obtain a travel signature from an International Center Student Advisor on your I-20 before you leave the U.S. In order to request a signature, come to the International Center at least 2 weeks prior to your departure with:
    1. Your current class and/or next semester schedule.
    2. Your valid I-20
  • Address Change: You must notify the International Center within 10 days when you change your address.
  • Change of Major: If you change your major you must:
    1. Fill out the "Approved Majors by Degree and Certificate" form.
    2. Submit this form to the Registrar's office.
    3. Request a new I-20 from the International Center showing the change of major.
    4. Pick up and sign your new I-20 at least 3 weeks after making your I-20 request.
  • Transferring: If you intend to transfer to another school you must notify the International Center with:
    1. A letter of acceptance from the school you are transferring to.
    2. An Immigration Transfer Out form allowing us to electronically transfer your I-20.
  • Program Extensions: If you are unable to complete your degree program by the "Program End Date" noted on your I-20, you must schedule an appointment with an International Student Advisor.

Academic Responsibilities

Study Full-time: F-1 students must enroll in and complete at least 12 credits each semester except summer, which is optional. Failure to do so is a violation of your F-1 status.
