Workforce and Economic Development

 

Prison Programs

The College of Southern Nevada Division of Workforce & Economic Development (DWED) Prison Programs
focuses on the development and delivery of credit, noncredit and customized education programs to inmate
population. We strive to provide post-secondary education to prison personnel and inmates, to increase
employment opportunities and educational advancement.

We primarily offer courses to prison inmates who are working on getting their Associates of General Studies
Degree (AGS), Associates of Arts Degree (AA), Associates of Business Degree (AB), and Associates of
Applied Science Degree (AAS).

Prison personnel can also take courses to obtain an Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS) Criminal
Justice-Correctional Emphasis, Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS) Criminal Justice-Hotel/Industry
Security Emphasis, Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS) Criminal Justice-Juvenile Justice Emphasis,
Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS) Criminal Justice-Law Enforcement Emphasis, and Associate of
Applied Science Degree (AAS) Criminal Justice-LETA Emphasis, or their desired field of study.

Classes are currently being held for prison Inmates at the following Nevada Department of Corrections (NDOC) Institutions:
Florence McClure Women's Correctional Center (FMWCC)
High Desert State Prison (HDSP)
Southern Desert Correctional Center (SDCC)
Southern Nevada Correctional Center (SNCC)
Jean Conservation Camp (JCC)

CSN-DWED Prison Program Initiatives


Inmates Graduate Bard

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.. April 16, 2007 – On Sunday, April 15, at 7 p.m., Bard College's "Bard Prison Initiative" (BPI) was featured on the CBS news magazine 60 Minutes. The focus of the story was BPI's presence at Eastern Correctional Facility and the program’s third commencement, which was held at Eastern in February. Among those interviewed were Leon Botstein, president of Bard College; Max Kenner, BPI director; Daniel Karpowitz, BPI director of policy and academics; Tabetha Ewing, associate professor of history; and many of the students, past and present, at Eastern.
