CSN Learning Support

Centers for Academic Success tutoring centers offer in-person learning support services seven days per week to be more accessible to all students. We are open Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Friday through Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

We provide quality DROP-IN academic assistance to all students enrolled in for-credit courses at CSN.

Academic learning support includes assistance with learning strategies, Canvas, Brainfuse online tutoring, Microsoft Office, reading, writing, oral presentations, math, and science. CAS tutors also provide support to study groups and assistance for placement test preparation in reading, writing, and math. Visit CAS Services for more details about academic learning support.

Centers are in the learning commons/computer lab areas (C buildings) on each campus. See hours and locations below.

Brainfuse tutors are available 24/7.

Certified Brainfuse tutors provide live, on-demand tutoring and assignment help in various subjects, like writing, math, and science. To access your Brainfuse account:

1.  Login to Canvas.

2.  Go to one of your courses.

3.  Click the Brainfuse Tutoring button in the left-hand navigation bar of your course.

4.  You can access Brainfuse in your account profile in the upper left-hand corner if you cannot find it in one of your courses.

Please get in touch with Haunani Smith at haunani.taylor@csn.edu to inquire about hours or trouble accessing Brainfuse. You may visit one of the Centers for Academic Success to learn how to use the 24/7 online tutoring service.

Qualifications of Tutor Applicants

  • Have at least 12 hours of undergraduate work with an earned overall college grade point average of at least 3.0.
  • Have earned B or higher in the subject applying to tutor.
  • Demonstrate during the interview good communication and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to work with students from varied backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Provide a recommendation from a faculty member that teaches the subject you wish to tutor.
  • The maximum amount of hours a tutor can work in the centers is 20 hours per week. If you are also employed at another department at CSN or any other NSHE Institution, your hours will be combined and you cannot exceed 29 hours at both locations per week.

Tutor Application Process

  1. Submit your application via Workday. Visit CSN's listings on Workday. On the search bar enter tutor and select Part-time Tutor/Learning Assistant. There should be a position for each of our three main campuses. Make sure to submit the application to the campus where you prefer to work. If you would like to work at more than one location submit your application to the campus where you believe you will be working the most (i.e. your main location).
  2. Obtain a set of official or unofficial transcripts and a completed Faculty reference.
  3. Submit the completed application (application, reference, and transcripts) via workday. You can submit multiple documents under the Resume/CV portion of the application.
  4. Once we have received the completed application, your information will be sent to that department(s) of the subject(s) you are requesting to tutor.  You may be required to interview and/or test with that department in order to be approved for that subject(s)
  5. Once the subject(s) have been approved and an opening is available, you will be interviewed by Centers for Academic Success.
  6. Shortly thereafter, you will be notified regarding potential employment.

Submitting your application does not guarantee a position in our department.  Hiring is based on available openings and outcome of the hiring process.  Incomplete applications will be kept in the system for one year and then deleted for confidential reasons.

Once hired, tutors are required to undergo training that provides knowledge and practical skills necessary to become an effective tutor. The tutor will need to complete list of departmental trainings prior to the first tutoring assignment. Ongoing professional development training is offered and required throughout employment with the Centers for Academic Success.
