TITLE V HSI Project - Mapa Matemático/Math Map

WHO WE ARE

The College of Southern Nevada is proud to be a designated Hispanic Serving Institution by the United States Department of Education. As such, CSN has been awarded a grant that will provide CSN the opportunity to improve the academic success of Latinx, low-income, and other underrepresented students.

El Mapa Matemático or Math Map will serve CSN students through specialized math courses, math tutors, personal growth workshops, advising, the opportunity to showcase knowledge in an annual math summit, and more. Students will meet with Math Navigators each semester as they progress through their
educational journey at CSN. Math faculty will teach sections of math courses designed for student success.

OUR TEAM

Janna Bernstein

PROJECT DIRECTOR

Born and raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles to a family of educators, Dr. Janna M. Bernstein, had an innate passion to pursue a career in Education. She completed her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Southern California (USC) and received a Masters in Postsecondary Administration and Student Affairs from USC's Rossier School of Education. She received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Cultural Studies, International Education, and Multicultural Education from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr. Janna is a scholar practitioner always encouraging individuals to question and think critically about their positionality and goals in life. She is passionate about helping students in all facets of their lives and supporting their basic needs both personal and educational. Her work experience includes academic advising, residential education, scholar development, student leadership, career advising, student activities, grant management, non-profit organization collaboration, teaching, and creating culturally relevant pedagogy. In her spare time, Dr. Janna enjoys spending time with family and friends and her two energetic rescue puppies, exploring the hidden treasures of cities, visiting college campuses, attending live concerts and plays, and arts and crafts.

Asha Chavoya

Asha always enjoyed math even though it was not always easy for her. To clarify her career goals, Asha applied to different internships after college such as “Preparing Undergraduates through Mentoring towards PhDs” (PUMP), Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), and worked as a Supplemental Instruction Leader (SI Leader). Each of Asha's internships allowed her to see that she loved math and trying to figure things out- everything was like a fun puzzle. Asha is hopeful and passionate of wanting to enhance the math class experience here at CSN. Asha loves spending time with her husband and their two dogs. She also loves to knit, crochet, and continuing to learn Spanish and Portuguese.
